The history recounted here is based on foundational work begun by Emiel Elbert Audirsch, a grandson
of Adolph Carl Audirsch. Elbert Audirsch, my Father, began work on the family history in the 1960's and
continued until his death in 1980. Because of his desire to know more about his roots and those of his
family he began to research the history of the Audirsch family. Since the Audirsch name was and still is
such a rare and closely held family name it was difficult for Elbert to gather information outside the
immediate family members. He spent many hours writing letters, making phone calls, driving to visit relatives,
visiting cemeteries, and searching for documents; many times reaching a dead-end. He never tired of the
pursuit of the Audirsch name and history. He was however unable to reach further than the area of Charleston,
South Carolina, where it is believed that Adolph Carl arrived after leaving Germany. Adolph Carl was then was
followed by his wife Joehanna Augusta Lehmann Audirsch a short time later. The fact that all ship and immigration
records were burned in a great fire in Charleston early in this century caused a break in the chain of information
any further back. It is believed that Adolph Carl left from Bremen or Hamburg, Germany on a ship bound for
America. No record however, has ever been found to document this. I have personally talked with two families in
Germany who are Audirsch's but neither of them know of other relatives in Germany nor in any other part of the world.
One of the families I talked with, had been told by older family members that their grandfather may have been
adopted in the 1800's but knew nothing else. The other family that I spoke with was fairly certain that their Grandfather
had come from Allenburg, Ostpreussen (East Prussia).
Please help me to make this Audirsch Family History as complete as possible. If you have information that I may
not have regarding the Carl Audirsch Family please contact me so that I can include it in the information I have. If you
will either type or hand write your information I will include it in the Audirsch History booklet I have prepared. Please
set aside some time to do this and forward it to me. This includes pictures you may have of the older Audirsch's or
those of yourself.
Thank you for assisting in this project that will allow us to pass on the heritage of the Audirsch Family name. A
special note of Thanks and Appreciation goes to Sherry Audirsch who has spent many hours and money researching
the Audirsch lineage. Much of the information here was supplied by her and her efforts have provided invaluable
information and resource materials. Thanks Sherry!!
